When Mike Met Molly…

I am so happy it is officially fall! I love all the seasons but this is by far my favorite season for fashion. It’s a great time to dress up and try a lot of the new trends and not let the weather determine how layered or un-layered my outfits will be. I’m also psyched it’s boot season again! I finally found the perfect pair for me towards the end of winter and I’ve been dying to bust them out again for fall. Note: The perfect boot for me fits my slightly larger calf while still looking semi-roomy over my skinny jeans or leggings. Oh, the possibilities!

Another great thing about fall- great new TV shows. I’m all about getting out there and living the TV show that is my life but every once in awhile it’s  nice to stay in, veg on the couch and get lost in someone else’s situation- be it love, drama, adventure or all of the above. This season I was particularly drawn to the show Mike & Molly on CBS. I kind of cringe when there are shows about plus-size people because well, we’re not always portrayed in the best light and there’s a lot of stereotyping that goes on. I appreciated the fact that this show was entirely based on them and that they were not the “best friend” or “wingman” but the true main characters. For those that haven’t caught a glimpse of the shows premises, Mike and Molly are a cute chubby couple that met at their overeaters anonymous meeting (odd meet cute, but a meet cute nonetheless!).

I watched the Pilot this past Monday and I liked it. They were both very real: both on a mission to drop some pounds but deep down like who they are as people. They have realistic challenges that a lot of plus size people face today. For example, the unsupportive support team: Molly’s slim mother and sister sit down eating chocolate cake in front of Molly while she’s doing her thing on the elliptical- and they mention (several times) how rich and moist it is. Her mom even mentions to not worry about losing weight and that she’s just big boned. Then of course I laugh when Molly shoots back that bones shouldn’t jiggle. Sigh, oh do I have my unsupportive support team…that’s a whole other story. Or Mike’s awkward moment when a kid from Molly’s class asks how he could be a police officer if he’s so fat. Look, I know everyone has their issues to deal with but being plus size I personally feel there’s a little more that we take on; the rude comments, those awkward moments, wondering if we will literally fit in, or the people in our life who need us to stay overweight. I could go on and on but I would love to know what you guys think? Do we endure a little more being plus sized or are we being a little pity party? Also if you watched the show what did you think? (And if you haven’t watched I think you should!). I can’t wait to see how the story evolves and hope that maybe it can be a bit of an eye opener to the non-plus size part of America.

Till next time,

V
